My Fun Day at Work

This post is more than a year old.
World of Warcraft is an ever-changing game. While reading this post, keep the date it was written in mind—changes may have occurred since then!

Okay, right off the bat, this post has nothing to do with World of Warcraft. Nothing at all. This post has to do with a fun little situation I had at work today.

I work at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. I work as an Application Specialist in Information Technology Services. So I’m standing at the helpdesk work bench, putting a processor and heat sync back into a computer, with thermal compound all over my hands, when the phone rings. So, I answer it with the clean part of my hands.

“IT Services, this is Brandon, can I help you?”

“Hey, this is (someone) in AIMS-112, there’s water leaking from the ceiling. I’ve called facilities but I think you may want to come take a look.”

So I call my boss. As soon as I get the words “leak,” “ceiling” and “AIMS-112″ out of my mouth, he says, “Let’s go take a look.”

So we go over there. I’m imagining, like, the little metal piece that puts out fires is leaking a little, but my boss mentions something about the AC system. So we walk in the room, here’s what we see:

Flood1

Holy cow! It’s hard to see in the picture, but the water is coming down HARD. It’s pretty obvious that the computers on the far bank are going to be toast… wait, is that the power light on the monitors? Holy crap, the power’s on…

In the meantime, we start moving all the computers from the center bank out of the way of the potential torrent. (The picture was taken after that.) We stand and watch, waiting for facilities to turn off the power, water, etc., just waiting for a monitor to zap. Oh, and monitors do indeed zap, with flames and all. Also, the ceiling starts to come down.

The floor is getting more and more covered by water as time progresses.

Flood5

By this time, the water has started to leak out into the hallway, into storage closets, and into surrounding classrooms.

Flood6

While we’re waiting outside (except for Jake, who is the only one who saw the monitor catch fire–although I did see one go kinda fritzy, the screen lit up and a big white line went up and down it by itself), facilities arrives, and starts to work on the AC system in the ceiling. We poke our head in for a few last looks.

So we go back to our offices, leaving facilities to do their thing. I’m sure we’re in for quite a bit of work later this week…
