Not Very Professional

This post is more than a year old.
World of Warcraft is an ever-changing game. While reading this post, keep the date it was written in mind—changes may have occurred since then!

I’ve decided to take up mining and engineering on my death knight. I really enjoyed engineering, and I’ve been gradually shifting mindsets from “level a ton of alts and learn every profession” to “level a character or two and learn the professions I really enjoy.”

The problem is, I started at level 55 with a skill level of 1 for each. So now I get to run back to newbie zones and mine copper ore and make rough blasting powder until my head spins.

So, my question to you, dear readers: is there any way to ease the pain? Any secret tips for leveling mining without going crazy? Any easier way to level engineering without spending a bazillion gold?

my advice is don’t level mining til after you’re done leveling, cause by that time you’ll one shot pretty much anything stupid enough to attack you up until outland, also find a mining path guide, helps a ton, thought you’ll still be bashing your head against the wall with mithril and thorium, those two ores are a real pain in the but. As far as I know, the only way to save a ton of gold while leveling engineering is to farm as many of the mats yourself… big time headache… =\

Start another alt from level 1. Give him mining as one of his professions, and maybe skinning as the other. Ok, so you’re still running around gathering low level materials, but it’s far less soul destroying to do it as a low level, while you level, than to re-roll a profession at 60+ and have to farm for hours while noobs ask you to “help me wid quets plzthx?”

It’s not necessarily the cheapest option but there was a point in time I had a lot of spare resources laying around (ores) so I decided to check if I could just train mining via smelting stuff and was able to smelt my way all the way to thorium ore which I needed some bars from at the time.

So it is indeed possible to smelt your way up the mining skill but depending on how many resources you have laying around doing nothing this may be an expensive venture.

That should cover mining quite well… engineering will require a little research to see if all that crap you smelted can be used for engineering as well.
